From It’s Not Your Father’s Oldsmobile-Ten Hot Maintenance Tips to Protect Your Investment
by Craig Fitzgerald for www.collegexit.com

"So, you graduated, got a job, went right out and bought a new car with your first check. But even if your car is brand new, you’ve got to remember to maintain it if you want it to outlast your payments. Here are ten hot tips for you to remember to keep your rig running strong.

Lubrication
A lube, oil and filter change is the single most important thing you can do to keep your car running in top condition. If your car is brand new, the oil that comes inside the engine is a lighter weight, known as “break-in” oil, and it allows your engine parts to settle into a groove. Change it early, even as early as 1,500 miles. Make your own decision about the 3,000-mile oil change rule. Consumer Reports says you can easily get away with 5,000-mile changes if you keep your eye on the level.

Tires
Keep those baloney-skins inflated to their proper rate! And don’t go by the maximum inflation shown on the sidewall, either. Look at the sticker inside the driver’s door. It will tell you the manufacturer’s recommended pressure for the front and rear. Tires too heavily inflated might increase fuel economy, but they’ll also provide a punishing ride, while also wearing out the center of the tread. Under-inflated tires will wear out the outer tread and give you terrible fuel economy."
